Educational Opportunities Academic Scholarship and Advancement Support and Sustainability

Educational opportunities for Liberian young adults varied greatly during the war. Some could not afford the tuition and fees or did not have access to school, many were transient residents of refugee settlements, and some were too busy providing for the needs of the family to prioritize education.

RYHF is meeting students where they are at, academically and emotionally, regardless of age and through the development of peer and professional tutoring programs. We are addressing their emotional needs through our counseling and pastoral care program, as they sort through their personal war histories and approach their lives with renewed focus and purpose.

In 2008, the RYHF scholarship team carried out extensive research, conducted interviews, and visited university and trade school campuses throughout Liberia to assess the status of advanced educational opportunities in the post-war nation. These efforts led to identification of the following career pursuits as most needed in Liberia at this critical time of rebuilding; Agriculture, Architecture, Nursing, Social Work and Teaching.

In 2012, a new need was identified to support safe and efficient building projects. Vocational training in plumbing, electricity, carpentry and masonry were added to the list for scholarship consideration. And in 2013 we responded to the National Commission on Higher Education’s request that we consider Geology Mining Engineering in our program options and established a new partnership with the University of Liberia. RYHF has carefully selected the following Liberian universities for partnership in providing financial scholarships to students actively pursuing these desperately needed professions:

  • Cuttington University
  • Stella Maris Mother Patern College of Health Sciences
  • Stella Maris Polytechnic – Monsignor Stephen Kyne Technical College
  • Smythe Institute of Technology (School of Nursing)
  • University of Liberia
  • Bomi Community College
